GLOBAL ECONOMICS WEEKLY
No winter break
Global manufacturing output is continuing to catch up with resilient global consumption.
We have revised up our GDP projections for Japan and the UK, while we see upside risk to our 4% US Q4 09 GDP estimate.
Still, G7 central banks must address heavy accumulated slack and prospective fiscal consolidation...
.... whereas the tightening cycle in emerging markets, already underway, is likely to continue during Q1 with hikes in India and Korea.
Developed Economies
US: Better GDP growth not yet leading to job growth
We see upside risks to our Q4 09 real GDP forecast of 4.0%; stronger growth is lifting household income but not yet translating into steady job gains.
Euro area: Europe braces for fiscal consolidation
We continue to look for a steady, if unremarkable, economic recovery. The PMI data are encouraging, but the retail and auto sales data signal soft consumption.
UK: Output thaws
The PMIs point to firm growth in Q4, consistent with our analysis of aggregate demand.
Japan: Main scenario in motion
The Japanese economy relied heavily on domestic and overseas stimulus in 2009, heightening market sensitivity to the “state of intervention” in 2010.
Emerging Markets
China: Look for strong December data
We see the PBoC’s increase in the 3m bill rate as the early stage of interest rate hikes, but expect overall monetary tightening to remain back-loaded in 2010.
Emerging Asia (ex-China): Perking up
Activity data are picking up again, in line with our expectations, after taking a breather in early Q4 09. We believe that risks to 2010 growth, if anything, are biased to the upside.
EMEA: A decent start
The modest economic recovery seems on track and 2009 fiscal targets appear to have been met, particularly in some of the region’s more problematic countries.
Latin America: A happy new year
Recent activity data have supported the recovery story in Chile and Mexico in particular, but seem to point to some excessive optimism regarding Brazil.
